People who drive long distances to work are more likely to be overweight and have poorer fitness levels than people who live closer to their jobs, a U.S. study said Tuesday.

?

The study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine was based on data from nearly 4,300 people in Texas near the major metropolitan hubs of Dallas-Fort Worth ? one of the top five most congested areas in the United States ? and nearby Austin.

?

People who drove longer distances to work were found generally to have larger waist circumferences, lower cardiovascular fitness levels, higher blood pressure and higher body-mass index.

?

“Longer commuting distance may lead to a reduction in overall energy expenditure,” said lead investigator Christine Hoehner of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

?

“This study yields new information about biological outcomes and commuting distance, an understudied contributor to sedentary behavior that is prevalent among employed adults,” she said.

?

The long commuters, not surprisingly, also reported going to the gym or getting physical exercise less often than people who drove shorter distances to their jobs each day.

?

Commuters who traveled more than 15 miles to work were “less likely to meet recommendations for moderate to vigorous physical activity, and had a higher likelihood of obesity,” according to the findings.

?

The study linked commuting distances greater than 10 miles with high blood pressure.

?

Although the research did not examine other sedentary behaviors such as television watching, but Hoehner suggested future work could examine the time spent sitting across multiple scenarios to better determine how commuting affects health.

With the aid of a mic’d up stethoscope, it’s able to visualize a person’s heartbeat in a manner that has quite a bit more punch than the usual means — the person’s pulse rate determines the speed of the animation, while the volume of the heartbeat captured determines the brightness. Ron Paul supporters took control of the Maine Republican Convention and elected a majority slate supporting him to the GOP national convention.

The results gave the Texas congressman a late state victory.

In votes leading to the close of the two-day Maine GOP convention, Paul supporters were elected to 21 of 24 delegate spots from the state to the Republican national convention in Tampa, Fla., giving him a demonstrative win in the state.

Paul, the last challenger to Mitt Romney to remain in the contest, finished a close second behind Romney in Maine’s GOP caucuses in February.

Those results were nonbinding, however, and not everyone had a chance to cast a ballot before the results were announced, as a snowstorm forced the cancellation of some caucuses, including one in a Paul stronghold.

Romney won the February election with 39 percent of the vote to Paul’s 36 percent. Rick Santorum‘s 18 percent and Newt Gingrich’s 6 percent.

Nevertheless, the caucuses merely selected the delegates to the state’s party convention, and at that event, 21 of 24 voted to nominate Paul.

Romney’s aides say they don’t view Paul as a threat to winning the nomination, but are mindful not to do or say anything to anger his supporters.

“I think he’s being very careful because he knows how important the Ron Paul voters are – they obviously represent a very different dynamic,” said Mike Dennehy, a former top aide to Republican John McCain’s 2008 campaign.

“They are the most passionate and the most frustrated of any voters heading to the polls. And many of them are actually independents.”

In any case, the weekend’s turn of events would indicate the GOP has not yet united behind the man many call the presumptive nominee, and there are indications the infighting may last through the national convention this summer.

If nothing else, it’s a testament to the staying power of the movement started by Paul and his supporters, who are peerless in their devotion.

If Sony’s German site is to be believed, then it’s safe to say the outfit’s had a change of heart recently. According to a revealing spec sheet on the website, there’s now a T13 Ultrabook model with one of Intel’s latest chips on board. Just last week, Sony announced the Euro-bound T13 would be sporting a last-gen Core i3-2367M CPU, but the recent finding shows an i5-3317U variant (you know, the one on Sammy’s Series 9) could be in the works. Still, it’s unknown whether this Ivy Bridge-packing VAIO would replace its Sandy Bridge sibling or if it’s just going to be a complete different offering. We’ll have to wait and see.
